Why Betsey doesn't participate in any insurance plans…

After careful consideration, she made the decision not to be a provider for any managed care programs. Being an in-network provider would mean that she would be employed by the insurance company as opposed to working directly (and privately) for you. A colleague shared his perspective on insurance companies' practices in the NYTimes:

Many clients prefer to work with a therapist outside of their insurance plans for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • You hold a greater degree of privacy and confidentiality, since she is not required to share a great deal of your personal information with the insurance companies.

  • You can choose any therapist you want to work with - especially when she or he has been referred by a friend or colleague who has worked with that therapist.

  • Betsey and you are not limited to a pre-set number of sessions or certain treatment protocols that are determined by the insurance companies in order to control their costs.

  • By working privately with Betsey, you and she can collaboratively decide on the methods to use and the length of time you will work together, rather than having these decisions made by a third party.

For the possibility of out of network reimbursement from your insurance company, please ask the following questions of your insurance provider:

  • What is my out of network deductible and has it been met?

  • What is the out of network allowed amount per session?

  • What percentage of that amount will I be reimbursed when I pay out of pocket?

  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?

  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?

  • How do I request reimbursement?
